Secretum Cista Puzzlechest!

Secretum Cista

Puzzle Chest by Jesse Born

New Puzzle project underway

Beginning Prototyping

I mentioned in my last puzzle newsletter that I would soon be making a few commissioned pieces and that day has come! Most notably I have begun sketching 17(!) drawers in Fusion and trying to figure out the best layout for every drawer in the puzzle cabinet itself. It is very difficult to get every last detail of a piece out of my head and represented by numbers and lines on a virtual grid but I'm realizing that doing this is actually saving me hours of prototype work in the woodshop. I honestly should have started CAD designing my boxes a long time ago...It's extremely challenging for me, being new to the software, but so far I'm really enjoying it.
The chest is developing a theme and while I don't have every drawer mapped out just yet I do have a unique puzzle idea for almost every drawer. The chest will work a lot like a treasure hunt of sorts, where one drawer gives a clue or provides access to the next. There are special keys hidden throughout the chest which, when all accounted for,  will unlock the pièce de résistance! I don't want to say too much and spoil the puzzle but suffice it to say there's a lot more to the chest than meets the eye.
I also have to make sure to provide a quick reset for individual and grouped drawers because it's not very enjoyable to have to backtrack 100 moves to get a drawer closed when in a rush. I still haven't figured out how to make this a feature for every drawer.

I'll keep you posted!

I have been setting up a camera to record the prototyping process. You can watch me build the drawer seen above here on youtube.
I'm extremely pressed for time on this project because a. I'm supposed to have the chests done before Christmas, b. I'm making 6(!) of these all at once, c. I want to have a prototype of a new puzzle out on Jan. 1st, and d. I'm also taking pictures and shooting video to document the process! Wow. I'm sorry for everyone who misses out on buying one of the puzzle chests but I may make more in the future if there's a substantial demand.
